Project P.I.T.T. Performance & Lag Fixes

A physics sandbox about creating thousands of loose objects will, eventually, lag. Here’s what actually helps, from the developer’s own advice down to build habits.

The official three-step fix

Straight from Froke’s FAQ, in order:

  1. Turn off the retro effect — the PSX filter costs more than it looks like it should.
  2. Set graphics details to LOW.
  3. Reduce the resolution.

These three carry most machines through the late game — the system requirements floor is genuinely modest (GTX 750 Ti class).

The real enemy: loose products

Frame rate in this game tracks the number of physical objects on the floor, which is why:

  • A clogged lane is a time bomb — products pile while you’re not looking. Don’t AFK a clog; fix the funnel (automation guide).
  • Sweep after MESS!/LAG! — those achievements ask for 500 and 1,000 loose items; do them deliberately, save first, clean up after.
  • Combos die when FPS dies — the combo bar can’t survive a slideshow, which is why the MEGA! guide says to dump in batches your machine can simulate.

Clear Items (pause menu, added in update 1.0.5) deletes loose items that would otherwise crash or soft-lock the game. It refunds nothing — it’s the fire extinguisher, not the broom.

Specific symptoms

SymptomLikely cause and fix
Stutter during dumpsObject count spike — smaller batches, more fans, fewer piles
”Walking delay” / input lagSustained low FPS — apply the official three steps, clear the floor
Freeze when smashing piñatasCandy burst = object burst; route candy into the lane immediately
Game got slower every hourAccumulated floor litter — sweep or Clear Items
Lag on Steam DeckVerified but physics-heavy — see the Steam Deck page

Note on the word “freeze”: some players search “project pitt freeze tool” meaning the sticking mechanic — that’s sticky tools, not a performance issue.

1.0.5 stability fixes

Beyond Clear Items, the August 22 patch fixed several unplayability bugs: spawning above the hole and falling repeatedly, getting stuck in the spawn tube behind a tool mountain, key items lost in walls (they now respawn), and torch/UV lamp collection. If you shelved the game at launch over jank, the current build is meaningfully more stable — full list on the updates page.
